Everyone has their own opinion of what’s best, but for me it’s something like this. Being able to freeze a steak and 12 months later it’s still bright red. You take it out of the freezer and see zero freezer burns; it looks as fresh as if it was frozen just yesterday. You stop for a moment to do some quick math and you can clearly see the money you’ve been saving on groceries; because you were able to buy fresh food on sale and then keep it fresh for months. It’s like you always get sales prices.
If you have the same expectations too then you need to look for the following:
- Manual operation. Automatic vacuum sealers just don’t give you the same amount of control. The sensors are also just another potential failure point. Manual operation also means you won’t crush fragile food like bread.
- Is the cost reasonable? You’re looking to save some money. That’s why you’re going to buy a vacuum sealer. You want to save, but you also don’t want something too cheap. Too cheap carries too many risks that will end up costing you more money in the end. Something under $100 would be perfect.
- Are the bags expensive? Can you use a different brand of bag? Again, you want to save money. You want to buy a vacuum sealer that uses reasonably priced bags. Having the option of using cheaper bags makes the buy even more worthwhile.

- How well will it seal the bag & will it hold the seal until you open it?
- Vacuum pump
- How strong is the pump that does the vacuuming?

It’s not Exactly Perfect
The FoodSaver V2244 is a great food vacuum sealer, gets my vote as the best home vacuum packaging machine, and is a definite worthwhile buy, but it isn’t perfect (nothing is). It has a few drawbacks that can be inconvenient. However, they are just inconveniences and don’t impact its ability to vacuum seal.
Vacuum sealing food with moisture or liquids requires a little extra work. You have to freeze it for about an hour, or until the liquid is mostly frozen before you can vacuum seal it. It takes a little more time, but this guarantees a lasting seal that won’t break unexpectedly. Taking this extra step seals food with liquids such as meats, sauces, soups, etc. almost as well as dry food. You can’t really write this Foodsaver off for requiring extra work to properly seal moist meats and liquids. This is a problem with all suction vacuum sealers (even the expensive ones like this one). To avoid this inconvenience completely, you would have to spend a little more for a chamber vacuum sealer.
Another minor inconvenience you could probably complain about is there’s no built-in bag cutter; a small feature that the more expensive higher end models have. If you’re using a bag roll then you’ll have to cut it with a scissor, or knife. You won’t get the perfect straight cut, but you do still get more control of where you want to cut.
You also have to allow 20 seconds in between seals to prevent overheating. Sealing more than one bag within 20 seconds can sometimes result in poor seals and a weaker vacuum. It isn’t much of an issue though if you think about it. It takes more than 20 seconds to bag the next batch. By the time you finish bagging it, that 20 seconds would have been long gone. You would have to spend three times more for a built-in cooling fan. You won’t need that unless you’re planning to seal over a hundred bags a day.
All the Stuff That Makes it Great
Alright so there’s a few minor stuff the v2244 FoodSaver is missing, but that doesn’t stop it from being the best choice for home use. It works flawlessly with dry foods. Vacuum sealing dry foods are as easy as bagging it and pressing the vacuum & seal button. Don’t misunderstand though. Just because it works flawlessly for dry foods doesn’t mean it can’t handle moist food or food with liquid. Food with a little moisture just takes a little more work. You have to freeze them for about an hour and they vacuum and seal just as well as dry foods.
So compact you can leave it out
Its compact size takes up very little counter space. You can leave it out and still have plenty of room left for your other kitchen toys. For those of you who don’t want to leave it out, it’s small enough to easily hide it in a drawer or cupboard. Buy the V2244 if you want a compact vacuum sealer that won’t take up the whole counter.
