The Weston 12 meat grinder is built with a ¾ HP electric motor. For most home users, this is more than enough. It’s almost as strong as the commercial units– which typically use a 1 HP or more motor. Compared to others that are built for home use, it ranks up near the top in terms of power.
The difference between this and the commercial unit is this meat grinder is several times cheaper. A commercial unit can cost several thousand dollars. I can’t really think of a reason for home users like us to spend thousands of dollars on a commercial unit.
How fast can it grind?
The manufacturer claims that this thing can chew out 540 pounds of meat in just one hour. I didn’t have 540 pounds of meat to really test this, but the 3 pounds roast that I threw in there came out right away .
I’m sure the 540 pounds per hour is going to vary depending on what kind of meat you throw in there and how much prep you’ve done. I don’t believe any of us home users are going to have 540 pounds of meat to test the claim anyways. The important thing is this thing is fast and it’ll save you a lot of time.
What can it grind?
The Weston #12 electric meat grinder can pretty much handle any meat you can throw at it.
Sausage makers should have no problem grinding a little bit of fat and meat. For the hunters, tougher and more fibrous meats like elk and deer can be processed just as easily without any issues, or slowdowns.
Pet owners who want to grind raw foods shouldn’t have any issues grinding small bones. The manufacturer doesn’t mention this unit being able to grind small bones, but smaller chicken bones like wings and thighs go right through without any problems.
If you’re grinding small bones you might just want to tone it down a little and not shove too much down at once. Otherwise you might risk clogging the thing. If that happens then you have to take off the front and unplug it before you can use it again. It shouldn’t take more than a couple minutes, but it’s just of a hassle if it does it often. As long as you don’t overdo it and jam a ton of bones and I once I’ll see this be a problem.

How easy is it to use?
Using this isn’t very complicated. There’s only two buttons, on and off. Unfortunately there is no reverse feature, but I don’t think you’ll be needing it much anyways. Using it is easy. Drop meat into pan, push the on button and then push the off button when it’s done. It’s as simple as that.
How easy is it to feed in meat?
It has a large feeding pan to hold meat and a wide diameter feeding tube. With the feeding tube being 2.5 inches wide in diameter, you will waste less time preparing your meats for processing. You can quickly cut the meat into larger pieces of 2 ½ to 3 inches wide. That’s like 4 to 5 cuts for a roast, and likely two to three cuts for a steak.
Clean up is really easy because almost everything is made of stainless steel. The housing, feed assembly, the auger, and even the cutting blades are made of stainless steel. That means the meat you’re processing won’t stick to the parts as much and they’ll come off a lot easier with just simple soap and water.
The manufacturer doesn’t recommend throwing the parts into the dishwasher, but a lot of user claims to do this without any issues. None has reported damage or discoloration or anything like that.
If you don’t want to take the risk, then just use the good old warm water and dish detergent. It doesn’t take more than a couple minutes to wash them and dry with paper towels.
This thing weighs 42 pounds and that’s because it’s made of quality metal parts. All the parts that matters are made of metal. They won’t break easily like the cheaper units that uses plastic gears and other plastic parts.
I can see this lasting for years and years if you take care of it. I’m confident that it’ll be the last meat grinder you have to buy for many many years.
