This air fryer reviews came after a quick glimpse of myself in the mirror after my shower. I did not like what I saw, so I wanted to take a break from our greasy, and unhealthy deep fryer. Looking for healthier options, I took into account the consumer star ratings and chose near five air fryers to consider. I chose the:
- Big Boss Oil-Less Fryer
- GoWise 8-in-1 Digital Electric Air Fryer
- Avalon Bay Air Fryer
- T-fal Actifry
- Philips Airfryer
Each one had its pros and cons; some more than others. I rated each one based on the product, the quality of the product versus the price tag of the product, and the pros versus the cons — does the good outweigh the bad?
Big Boss Oil-Less Fryer
I thought that the Big Boss oil-less fryer had a really cool concept. Using a halogen light, this “fryer” cooks your food in a glass bowl. Therefore, you get to watch your food cook inside, which I thought was super cool. It has analog controls and while these provide a certain ease of use, this feature also makes it quite difficult to choose an exact cooking time. I saw that very few air fryer reviews mentioned loud noises from the fan and some even mentioned smoke. I couldn’t find any large number of reported incidents other than these, so I’m guessing these were just minor malfunctions that occurs with all massively produced products. Should you be unlucky enough to be one of the few who get a faulty unit like these, the manufacturer, and big retailers like Amazon will provide a quick exchange/refund. So I’m not too worried about this.
What I love about this unit in particular is its large 16 quart capacity. It is ideal for families; you can even roast a whole chicken inside of this fryer. However, its large size does make it significantly harder to clean and store. The glass bowl wipes clean easily. You just have to be careful when handling the large bowl, covered in soapy water. It can be a little harder to get a good old on it if you’re washing it by hand.
There are a few downsides of this product. I was very happy about being able to cook for the entire family at once, but its large size makes it almost an abomination to store; unless you have a lot of space. My kitchen is a little on the small side, so I would end up having to clear a shelf in the pantry for. With that said, size is both a pro and a con.
Overall, I think there is very little problem with the Big Boss. For the price (check the price on Amazon), it provides great quality and seems to be relatively durable. In comparison to other similar products, I would rate the Big Boss Oil-Less Fryer a seven out of ten.
GoWise 8-in-1 Digital Electric Fryer
The GoWise 8-in-1 Digital Electric Fryer, with its small 3.7 quart cooking capacity, is perfect for cooking for one or two people. You would think that since it has such a small capacity, it would also be easier to make space on the counter and easier to store. However, you would be incredibly wrong; it does take up quite a bit of space.
The GoWise fryer has a removable pan and basket with a cool-to-touch handle making it easy to serve straight from the fryer to your dish without any fuss. The fryer has digital controls, so cooking times and temperatures are accurate and you can set them exactly where you want them. The controls also include 8 programmed presets. You can apparently even prepare cakes and brownies in this fryer, but I haven’t put that to the test myself. I would image you would have to experiment a little with the time and temperature before getting the perfect result.
The item is relatively easy to clean since it has removable parts. However, moving and storing is a pain thanks to its smooth egg shape, and lack of handgrips. I saw a handful of air fryer reviews that mentioned smoke and even flames as a result of an electrical fire, but I’m going to say it’s either user neglect, or just another byproduct of massively produced small appliances. In other words, it’s not very widespread, so the room for potential manufacturing errors need to be accounted for. Thus, it’s a normal potential problem an unlucky person could potentially run into. Again, a quick exchange or refund shouldn’t be a problem if it just smokes when you just started using it. On that note, it is important to keep your air fryer free from debris and grease build-up.
One issue I have with this product is the non-stick pan; which I found will usually still require to the use a light layer of oil. A small amount of oil is still needed to ensure the food do not stick and you can easily shake the basket to free any foods. Of course, the light oil is also needed to crisp up the food and get as close to that deep fried taste and texture as possible. With a lot of use, the non-stick coating is also susceptible to chipping. That’s not isolated to just his air fryer alone; it’s a problem common to most non-stick cooking surfaces.
Aside from these few things, the product is great. I wish it was a little bigger, but I like the feature that shuts the device off after the timer goes off to prevent overcooking. I would give this product a rating of seven out of ten. You can buy it on Amazon as well as check current prices.
Avalon Bay Air Fryer Review
The Avalon Bay Air Fryer is a very affordable option if you’re not looking to spend too much. It’s your most basic option. It has an analog timer and temperature control. The timer is a thirty-minute timer. Like most air fryers of this sort, it will automatically switch to the fryer’s standby mode once the timer goes off.
The capacity is small, but it’s perfect for two, or for making a small snack. The best thing about this fryer is the affordable cost. It also runs fairly quiet, and the analog controls make this fryer easy to learn and super simple to use.
I guess one bad thing you can complain about this fryer is the lack of a cookbook. Some research is needed if you don’t know the proper temperatures and times for what you are cooking. Also, if you are looking to buy accessories, you should know that in comparison to the price of the air fryer, the accessories are pretty pricey (see what the prices are on Amazon). For this air fryer reviews, I would give this a seven out of ten in comparison to other fryers.
The T-fal Actifry has a unique feature. Other air fryers require that you flip your food or give the basket a shake. However, the Actifry features an automatic stirring paddle that helps prevent sticking and helps get a more even cooking. Personally, I didn’t care too much for the stirring paddle because it can mash up some delicate fried foods like tater tots and the breading on foods like fried chicken. The good thing is, it’s detachable, so there is the option to remove it for foods that aren’t stirring paddle. Another pro includes all of the removable parts being dishwasher safe, so cleanup is really easy.
The biggest con for this product in particular is the preset temperature. There is one dial for the timer, but the temperature is preset by the manufacturer at 338-degrees Fahrenheit. That’s both good and bad. It makes it easier to use, but not all food cook well at the same temperature.
It has a lot going for it, but being unable to control the temperature is just a big turn off for me personally. Perhaps you might be ok with that. If you are, this one may be worthwhile for you. You can check the price on Amazon and buy it from there as well.
Philips AirFryer Review
The Philips Air Fryer compared to the others on this list is like the luxury version. It’s a pleasure to use and for the higher price tag, I would expect nothing less. I mainly chose this item in particular for this airfryer review because I wanted to compare a higher end air fryer to the other cheaper fryers. It turned out to be a great idea, because this thing rocks! It’s just the
This fryer has a unique starfish design in the bottom of the basket that helps circulate the hot air inside the unit to cook the food more evenly. Being equipped with analog controls makes it really easy to use, but makes exact times and temperatures a little impossible. This only applies to the base model. There are higher models that features precise digital controls for both time and temperature. If your budget can allow for it, you can buy the fryer with the digital controls for a little more. For me personally, if my budget allowed for it, I would pay more for the more precise digital controls.
It’s a little pricey (check price on Amazon) for what you get despite how fantastic it is. If you can look beyond the price and just want performance, it’s well worth buying. If you just can’t justify the price, I’d recommend looking at one of the other options.
These are all great choices for an air fryer. However, despite performance being the most important thing to look for, your budget gets the final say. You have to buy something you can afford. Of course, you wouldn’t want to go too cheap and get something that just doesn’t work very well, or is full of problems for you. If you want a basic air fryer, buy the Big Boss or the Avalon. If you only way to buy the best, and buy it once, then buy the Philips. I hope these air fryer reviews were able to help you get a better idea of what might be a good option for you. Also, if you have any personal experience with any of these air fryers, please share it with us in the comments below.
